Believe it or not, there will be winners when it comes to commission lawsuit outcomes and MyStateMLS may be one of them. That’s the crux of our conversation with Dawn Pfaff, president of MyStateMLS, a nationwide MLS that is not affiliated with any Realtor board.
Pfaff shares her opinions on the value of the MLS (Realtor affiliated or not), what the future might look like and the mistakes many brokers and agents make when it comes to protecting their data.

Tracey Velt: I was listening to something the other day about how only first time buyers really need buyer representation or buyer agent representation. I was really surprised with that because there are a lot of things that go into it. It’s not just finding a home. Sure, you can go on Zillow or realtor.com and find a house you want to look at. But where you go from there is a lot more complicated. So tell me a little bit about why you were talking about even you still wanting representation and why you think that is kind of a misnomer.
Dawn Pfaff: It’s super important to have representation, but also to go through the whole process. I moved down to Florida from New York. And when I did, the laws were so much different. Even though I’m a broker for over 20 years and I’ve been a realtor, I could not have navigated the purchase here. The laws are completely different.
I went looking for a real estate attorney, because that’s what we do in New York. Well, down here, nobody uses attorneys. There’s not a lot of them who do this kind of work, and it was really hard to find. For as experienced as I am, I still wanted representation. I still wanted somebody who really knew the area.
