A proposal by St. Louis county in Missouri to force banks to offer mediation before foreclosing on a property in the jurisdiction is upsetting the mortgage industry, the St. Louis-Post Dispatch said in a new report.
The mortgage finance industry argues if the St. Louis County Council allows the proposal to go through it will discourage lending in the area and drive up interest rates.
Advocates of the proposal say that’s not a concern and suggest there’s no data to show mediation has that effect on lending.
