Jobless claims inch higher to 279,000

Still a healthy job market

Jobless claims jumped by 2,000 filings to 279,000 for the week ending June 6, the U.S. Department of Labor said.

The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 filings, changing from 276,000 to 277,000.

Additionally, the 4-week moving average grew to 278,750, an increase of 3,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250, adjusting from 274,750 to 275,000.

“There are no special factors in today's report, one that, despite increases in many readings, still points to extremely healthy conditions on the unemployment side of the labor market. Next week's report for initial claims will be very closely watched as the June 13 sample week coincides with the sample week for the monthly employment report,” analysts with Econoday said about the report.
