Detroit puts first dent in campaign against blight

Demolishes 78-year-old housing complex

According to The Wall Street Journal, Detroit is kicking out the old, and focusing on the new, with the municipality launching the demolition of the city’s 78-year-old Frederick Douglass Homes complex. Currently, the city emergency manager plans to spend a huge portion of its new $1.25 billion investment fund on blight elimination.

As the WSJ explains:

"Even before a shovel turns on new development here, [the demolition] will bring enormous benefits to the surrounding community and to the budget of the city of Detroit," said Shaun Donovan, secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, whose department provided $6.5 million in emergency funding to raze the complex of 12-story towers, mid-rise apartments and townhouses."
